Alternative Asset Classes
Alternative Asset Classes
Beyond the three primary asset classes (stocks, bonds and cash) many other types of investments can be used to diversify investments portfolios. The term “alternative assets“ is highly flexible. It may include specific physical assets, such as natural resources or real estate, or methods of investing, such as hedge funds or private equity.
Alternative assets often are highly dependent on innovative investing strategies or individual skill in selecting specific investments. For example, hedge funds exist to pursue investment strategies that often rely on the manager’s judgment and that may be difficult or impossible for a mutual fund; with collectables such as art or antiques, the value of your investment depends on the property of a specific work. As a result, even if you are very knowledgeable about a specific asset class, you might do well to seek out expert advice and guidance when selecting alternative assets for inclusion in your portfolio.
